Fergus is back on Earth at last, trying to figure out how to live a normal life. However, it seems the universe has other plans for him. When his cousin sends him off to help out a friend, Fergus accidently stumbles across a piece of an ancient alien artifact that some very powerful people seem to think means the entire solar system is in danger. And since he's the one who found it, they’re certain it’s also his problem to deal with.
With the help of his newfound sister, friends both old and new, and some enemies, too, Fergus needs to find the rest of the artifact and destroy the pieces before anyone can reassemble the original and open a multidimensional door between Earth and a vast, implacable, alien swarm. Problem is, the pieces could be anywhere on Earth, and he’s not the only one out searching.

Intergalactically renowned finder Fergus Ferguson is on a mission to save the solar system in Palmer’s lighthearted but meandering third Finder Chronicles adventure (after Driving the Deep). While spending some time in 25th-century Scotland with his newfound little sister, Isla, Fergus’s alien bioware leads him to find several fragments of a mysterious device. The discovery prompts a visit from an Asiig alien, and Fergus learns that the fragments are parts of a key that could open a portal to a dimension filled with predatory creatures called Vraet. Several factions seek to control this key, and Fergus must ensure that the fragments don’t fall into the wrong hands. With old friends at his side, he travels across Earth collecting the remaining pieces, occasionally bringing Isla with him on heists that, while dangerous, don’t do much in the way of building momentum. Still, Fergus is as charming and witty as ever, and his relationship with Isla adds depth to an otherwise repetitive outing. Fergus Ferguson, professional finder, is on Earth for the first time since running away to Mars as a teenager. He recently found out that he has a sister and is enjoying his extended family. While doing a favor for his cousin, he stumbles on some musical space trash. But it turns out that Fergus has just found a piece of an ancient door that has been blocking a hungry enemy capable of eating the universe. Fergus, his sister, and his outer-space friends have to work together to find the rest of the pieces before others with a mind toward bringing about the apocalypse put the door together. Fergus' life is complicated, and he routinely finds himself in increasingly dangerous situations. But he seems to always find his way, and that is what is enjoyable about this series. He stumbles into this cosmic fight that he didn't even know existed, but then takes it on with the intent to help.
